OEM Vacuum Parts

Every turbocharged engine, from that in a Chrysler car like 300 to that in an SUV such as Jeep Wrangler, needs a constant vacuum source. This is so because turbochargers create positive boost pressure, which can be problematic for an engine if it isn't depressurized. Vacuum pumps create that ultra-low-pressure space.

What a vacuum pump does is so important, in fact, that emissions solenoids and turbocharger wastegate actuators need them, too. That job: to help ensure that the booster's vacuum remains constant, a result that, itself, provides the necessary braking force. Vacuum pumps aren't all created equal, though: there are two kinds: mechanical and electric.

Mechanical vacuum pumps are the quieter and more durable of the two. They're driven directly from engines; you can sometimes find one on the back of one camshaft or another. Engine oil lubricates them, enabling spinning rotors inside their housings to produce the vacuum. Electric vacuum pumps, on the other hand, work much the same, but they're electrically- rather than engine-driven. As such, they can be installed in the engine bay in a place that optimizes weight and makes the pump more accessible.

When an engine runs right and its pump is well lubricated, the latter can continue to create said vacuum. When it doesn't, however (and the pump isn't), you'll start to notice problems right away. For one, you may encounter a broken camshaft or broken timing components, which suggest that the pump has seized because of a lack of oil. You may also notice worn seals in the pump, oil in the vacuum system, or an illuminated check engine light on the dash.

If you see such symptoms, do an inspection, and if the results indicate that you need to replace the vacuum pump, it's easy, fortunately, whether you drive a Dodge Ram 1500, a RAM 2500, or otherwise. All you'll need are basic hand tools, most of the time. Before buying a new pump, though, make sure that you're going to get the genuine OEM article. The same goes for other vacuum parts -- harnesses, reservoirs, hoses, tubes, and the like.

Why Buy an OEM Vacuum Pump vs. Aftermarket?

The brand you trust manufactures them compatible with the model you drive specifically -- Ford Transit, Buick Regal, you name it. That's something that off-brands don't always do.
