OEM Brake Pads

What Brake Pads are and What They Do

They're the textured plates mounted atop the brake calipers in disc brake systems. They contact brake rotors to produce the friction used to slow a vehicle down and stop it. There are four types for sale these days, and you can get them all here for up to 35% off MSRP.

One kind is organic. These brake pads are the commonest, and they're for everyday use. Two others, metallic/semi-metallic and ceramic, are more durable kinds of brake pads. The last kind, carbon-fiber, is the toughest of them all. It's capable of delivering maximum stopping power.

What are the Signs Brake Pads are Failing?

They include damaged or worn surfaces, unusual whining noises, warning lights, grinding sounds, and vibration when braking. You may also notice slowdown and stopping times taking longer than usual. The average cost of brake pad replacement can be several hundred dollars just to start, so it's best to change them before they cause other problems, like rotor warp and damage.

When Should You Replace Brake Pads?

That depends on where you drive and how. Do so when you see the symptoms above. Otherwise, change them about every 40,000 to 50,000 miles. Before you order new ones, though, be sure they're genuine.
