Introduced in 1985, the GMC Safari was produced either as a cargo van or passenger van but fell into the minivan classification due to its mid-sized body. With the 2005 GMC Safari, you could choose from either a rear-wheel drive (RWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD) model with roughly $2,000 of a price difference. The sole powertrain option was a 4.3-liter, OHV V6 engine that produced 190 hp and 250 pound-feet of torque. The engine was mated to a four-speed automatic transmission. Safety features included child seat anchors, 4-wheel anti-lock brakes, electronic brake force distribution, daytime running lights, dusk-sensing headlights, and two headrests each for the front and rear.

The 2005 GMC Safari RWD had as much as 170.4 cubic feet of cargo space and 41.3 cubic feet of space with all seats in place. It could also carry as much as 1,591 pounds of payload. For towing purposes, it was rated for a maximum of 5,400 pounds.

For the 2005 GMC Safari RWD, gas mileage was rated at 14 mpg city, 20 mpg highway, and 16 mpg combined. For the AWD variant, fuel economy numbers were 12 mpg city, 16 mpg highway, and 14 mpg combined.
