1980s

The GMC Caballero, initially known as the GMC Sprint, was a rear-wheel drive (RWD) car-based pickup that General Motors introduced in 1971. It was GMC’s version of the Chevrolet El Camino. The Caballero and El Camino were also referred to as coupe utility pickups, where the front of the cargo bed also acts as the rear of the passenger compartment. The GMC Caballero was sold as the GMC Sprint in two model generations from 1971 until it was renamed for the 1978 model year. Special trims with distinct aesthetic features included the Laredo, Amarillo, and Diablo.

The 1987 GMC Caballero was the last model year for GMC’s coupe utility. Throughout the Caballero’s run, various V6 and V8 engines from Buick and Chevrolet were used. The common powertrain was a 5.0-liter Chevrolet small-block V8 engine that produced as much as 170 hp and 250 pound-feet of torque. It was a carbureted engine with gas mileage as good as 20 mpg. Like most car-based pickups at the time, it came with disc brakes for the front axle and drum brakes for the rear.

The Difference Between El Camino and Caballero

Although the GMC Caballero was based on the earlier Chevrolet El Camino, they had some distinct differences. One major distinction was the Caballero’s front grilles, which were horizontal and vertical bars that later became a full-width housing for the headlights. Another difference was that the El Camino had the SS package, which was a performance-oriented trim that boosted horsepower to as much as 375 hp.
