1990s

The Ford Bronco II is a compact SUV that was sold by Ford from 1984 to 1990. During its short run, it was sold alongside the full-size Ford Bronco. Produced as a three-door wagon, it was intended to compete with the likes of the three-door Jeep Cherokee, compact Chevy S-10 Blazer, and GMC S-15 Jimmy.

The Bronco II shared parallel development with the Ford Ranger. The use of the Ranger chassis lowered Ford’s production costs, selling the Bronco II for $1,200 less than the Bronco in 1985. That year, sales of the Bronco II doubled those of the full-size Bronco, with 106,554 Bronco IIs sold. For the Bronco II’s final model year, it came with a 2.9-liter V6 engine capable of 140 hp and 170 pound-feet of torque. Gas mileage was a combined 17 mpg, which was average for compact SUVs at the time. Fuel economy of modern compact SUV non-hybrids now run upwards of 30 mpg.

The Ford Bronco II was discontinued in 1990. The Ford Explorer took over its segment, now in its sixth generation with the 2025 model introduced in early 2024.
