The Chevrolet Caprice was a long-running full-size car lineup by General Motors (GM) that dates back to 1965. It was produced by Chevrolet from 1964 to 1996 and then by GM’s Australian subsidiary Holden until 2017. Coupe, sedan, and station wagon versions of the Caprice were available. After a hiatus from the US market that started in 1996, the Caprice returned as a full-sized police vehicle. But even before its production was transferred to Holden, the Chevrolet Caprice was one of GM’s most successful cars, having sold over 2.8 million vehicles by the year 1990.

The 1996 Chevrolet Caprice marked the conclusion of the nameplate’s fourth generation. It was powered by a 4.3-liter V8 engine that produces 200 hp and 240 pound-feet of torque. It came standard with a four-speed automatic transmission and in a rear-wheel drive (RWD) configuration. By comparison, the 2017 Caprice police car was equipped with a 301-hp. 3.6-liter V6 powertrain that was paired with a six-speed automatic.
