Timing Belts and Chains 101

What they do. A timing belt or chain (also called a cambelt) helps the many parts of an engine move at the right times. In doing so, they avoid colliding with each other. It works by synchronizing the movements of the crankshaft and camshaft. This, in turn, helps the engine's pistons pump and its intake and exhaust valves open and close correctly.

When to change one. For many newer models, the timing belt should be replaced every 100,000 miles. For most older ones, do so every 60,000 miles. Consult your owner's manual for more specifics. Otherwise, look for the signs it's going bad.

The symptoms of a failing one. Look for engine performance issues at lower rpm, oil leaks at the front of the engine, and smoky exhaust and excessive fumes, and listen for ticking sounds under the hood and engine misfires. Your engine may not even start at all. Complete failure, however, will cause timing misalignment, engine power loss, and usually, engine failure, and that's almost certain to damage to the engine valves and cylinder head.
