OEM Oil Filters
Your vehicle's oil filter works with an oil pump to remove contaminants from your motor oil. If your engine didn't have one, or if the filter clogs, wears out, or breaks down, pollutants can build up. When they do, they can wear out the pump and its bearings, not to mention the many other parts of an engine.
If you think you've got a bad oil filter, you're in luck. The symptoms are fairly easy to spot. They include dirty exhaust, low oil pressure (often suggesting a leak), and spluttering and metallic noises coming from your engine.
To avoid that eventuality, you should be consistent in changing your oil filter. When to do that is easy to remember -- it's during every oil change. You can also do it every other time you flush and replace your engine oil. Either way, that's usually every 3,000 to 5,000 miles or every 3 months, whichever comes first. There's an exception: if you've got an extended-life oil filter, it can last up to 10,000 miles.
By now, you're probably wondering what oil filter you need. There are several types for sale these days, and several features define them. For one, filter media -- it ranges widely, from paper to synthetic fiber. Flow rate is another. A full-flow filter, for instance, can capture particles down to 25 microns in size, whereas a lower-flow filter has secondary media that can trap those between 5 and 10 microns. The list goes on.
The most important thing to get right: the dimensions -- the thread and gasket sizes your owner's manual requires. It's critical that you install a filter that fits your vehicle because putting on the wrong one can lead to oil leaks, or worse, filter detachment. The latter can mean severe and costly engine damage.
