OEM Floor Mats

Call them floor liners or just plain car mats, floor mats are one of many interior accessories you can order online these days. Their job -- helping protect your vehicle's floor's plastics and upholstery -- might seem obvious. However, there's a lot more that goes into it than you might think. You're in luck, though -- our auto parts store has the details you need to make an informed buying decision.

All You Need to Know About Floor Mats

For one, most are either fabric, rubberized (in the case of thermoplastic elastomer, or TPE), or a synthetic plastic polymer, such as vinyl. Their composition can determine just how well they'll work for your needs.

  • Carpet floor mats are great for normal, everyday use. They absorb muck, though, which means you may need to wash them from time to time.
  • Rubber and vinyl floor mats, sometimes called "all-weather," are heavy-duty, designed to repel mud and liquids rather than absorb them. This means they can build up debris over time, so you'll have to clean them off occasionally. The easiest ways to do that: either a spray-down in your driveway or one at the local car wash.
  • There are custom floor mats for sale that have special features. For instance, those like caps, grooves, spikes, high treads, or raised or beveled edges can simplify cleanup. Those like clips, retainers, or nibs, on the other hand, can help the mats grip floors a lot better.
  • Some floor mats are fade- and stain-resistant, so they'll last a bit longer than more common types.
  • Just about every floor mat out there has a slip-resistant base. This has two benefits: it helps keep dirt and water from accumulating under the mat, and it helps keep it from crumpling.
  • Unfortunately, no floor mats last indefinitely. Sooner or later, they'll need to be replaced. Luckily, the signs its time are fairly obvious:

  • Bunching up and slippage. These indicate loss of grip, and a crumpled mat lodged under an accelerator or brake pedal can put you in serious danger during a drive.
  • Tearing. When rips happen, crud often gets trapped under a mat, and breaks in the material, no matter what it is, can only expand over time. This means grime can reach your vehicle's floor, damaging it or wearing it out eventually -- probably both.
