OEM Brake Rotors

Brake rotors are one of the three main parts of a brake system. More specifically, they're the discs in disc brakes, which attach to a vehicle's wheel hubs via ribs. They have two jobs. One is to fasten to brake calipers and brake pads and help create the friction needed to slow and stop the vehicle. The other is to help get rid of the braking process's main byproduct -- excess heat.

There are four types of brake rotors:

  • Blank & smooth. These are also simply called smooth. Many cars use them, as they're designed for everyday driving. They come solid or vented, they're relatively easy on brake pads, and they resist cracking and rust, meaning they're long-lasting. Best of all, they're comparatively low-cost.
  • Slotted. Many SUVs and trucks use these. They're spiral-grooved, meaning they can more easily keep their own surfaces clean by channeling away dust and debris better. The spiraled grooves also improve airflow.
  • Drilled. These are also commonly called "cross-drilled." Like slotted rotors, crossovers and pickups use them. They have holes drilled completely through them, as well as larger surface areas, which makes them better at dissipating heat. It also makes them more dependable in wet driving conditions. They're even ideal for use on the track and in towing applications.
  • Drilled & slotted. Some sports cars use these, not to mention other performance vehicles. They have many of the features of both slotted and drilled rotors, which makes them superb performers.
  • When Should You Replace Your Brake Rotors?

No matter what kind you have, you should replace them every 70,000 miles or so. Consult your owner's manual for a maintenance schedule with more details. If you're not sure whether you should, there's a good way to tell -- look for the signs the rotors may be going bad or have failed. They include:

  • Damaged rotor surfaces
  • Wobbling brakes
  • Unusual noises when you brake

  • If you see any of them, do an inspection; change any rotors necessary. Just be sure you swap them out in pairs. It'll keep your vehicle braking as well as it can. And if you're looking to buy new ones, our auto parts store can help.
